How to Write YouTube Titles That Rank & Get Clicks

The best videos in the world underperform with weak titles. YouTube matches search queries to your title, then humans decide whether to click — so your title has two audiences.

The two jobs of a title

  • Rank: include the phrase people actually search for.
  • Click: promise a specific outcome and create curiosity.

The 60-character rule

YouTube truncates titles past ~60 characters on most surfaces. Put the keyword and the hook in the first 40 — the rest is bonus.

Front-load the keyword

If your target phrase is 'remove background', start with it: 'Remove Background in 30 Seconds (No Photoshop)' beats 'The Ultimate Guide to Removing Image Backgrounds'.

  • Match your title to what the video actually delivers.
  • Use numbers and power words: Free, Proven, 2026, Fastest.
  • Never clickbait — mismatch kills retention.
  • Check character count before publishing.
